Our Children Need…
What do your children do right after school? Children need hours of ACTIVE play. Active play means time spent freely engaging in activities that encourage exploration and movement. This can be alone or with others. Studies show that children acquire academic skills when their free active play time is increased. You and I both know we don’t need studies to show us this because common sense and an understanding of children tell us so, but it is always nice when studies back up common sense. Outdoor active play can be more difficult to accomplish during months with shorter days but as adults who care for children, it is vital that we be attentive to children’s needs at all times. Take a look at your schedule Some suggestions might be to stop at a park near your house on the way home for 30-60 minutes or buy toys that encourage movement such as bikes, scooters, skateboards. Take your dog for a walk right after school with your child and explore new paths, Take a look at your backyard to see what you can add that will encourage digging, climbing, swinging, hanging etc. Keep your screen time until after dark. Pick one day a week to start with and grow it.

Your children are young for a brief time in life. Take advantage of it and all of us will benefit.

Performing Arts Announcements
The second semester whole-school performing arts production will be ‘Alice in Wonderland’. Auditions are open to all grades and all students are welcome and encouraged to audition whether they have experience or not. This is a great way to try on what acting feels like.  Auditions will be held on Wednesday January 18th at 3.30pm and Monday January 23rd at 12.30pm. Auditions will be held in grade order, starting with kindergarten, so older students should be prepared to wait quietly. Students will need to fully complete an audition form which will be available beginning Tuesday in the front office.  For the first time, students will also have access to portions of the script to review before the audition. If there is something holding your child back from auditioning that we can help with, please let us know.

The Shakespeare Festival will be held in Balboa Park on Saturday April 29th. Students who are interested in participating  in this festival should attend a lunchtime meeting on Wednesday January 11th at 12.45pm in the MPR. Parents of students 4th grade and below should contact Natasha at natasha@innovationsacademy.org.

Volunteers Needed
Volunteers are needed for backstage clean up and organization of the stage post- Grinch performance.  If you are able to help with this, please come to the MPR on Wednesday after school and thank you in advance.
