Let’s Get Reading! Innovations Academy Literacy Campaign

Want to improve your child’s memory, concentration, empathy, and grades? Make a regular habit of reading! At Innovations Academy (IA), a tuition-free K-8 public school in San Diego, we are so excited to take literacy to the next level.

Taking Literacy Above & Beyond

At Innovations Academy, we take academic high standards seriously. Our curriculum meets or exceeds California Learning Standards. We prepare our students for their best future with strong STEM classes, arts, Spanish, nature-based studies, and community connections throughout San Diego. Reading has always been a focus, with attention spent both in the classroom and with the help of our reading specialist, aka “Word Teacher”, Jen Franklin.

We feel that the reading bar has become very low in education and IA wants to ensure that 100% of students are reading at or above grade level. Our small, public school began our literacy campaign in January to do just that.

Ways to Make Reading Fun

What are some ways Innovations Academy is making reading fun, while also developing a great habit? Formally, we’re testing reading skills in an engaging way.

Innovations Academy uses the Accelerated Reader program, where students can pick through thousands of books to read (find new ones and the classics here) and answer a quiz at the end. Students earn points based on the length and complexity of the book. Students set reading point goals and monitor their progress. Students share, discuss and get excited together in class. So students can read graphic novels (there are some amazing ones out there– sure, start with Dogman, then move on to dealing with allergies to battles in American history to the I Survived series) but add more complex novels to earn points faster.

Other ways we make reading fun:

Teachers and staff share their favorite books.

  • Classroom door decorating contest.
  • Peer reading: time is allotted for reading at school – every day – for all grades.
  • Book related questions and activities are included in Morning Meetings and throughout the day.
  • Collaboration with Serra Mesa library to introduce students to their local library.
  • A goal to partner with the nearby Barnes & Noble.

One School One Book program where all students read about a spunky hamster named Humphrey. Every family receives a copy…all in the name of uniting the community around reading.

And how can you make reading fun?

We get it. At the end of the day we’re all tired, maybe a little cranky, and just need some downtime– kids and parents alike!

Too exhausted to read to your kids? What about reading independently but together? Or alternate who reads pages? And maybe end with an audiobook designed to send you BOTH to bed. Another idea? Wake up and read together. You’re both fresh and you get a little cuddle time to start the day.
